It provides a relaxed and peaceful environment whilst also offering loads of fun activities to keep everyone occupied, so there's no need to go far!
Whether you're looking for wilderness and windswept walks, culture and fine food, or fun activities for the kids, you'll find it all within the surrounding area of our holiday cottage.

If you're happy to jump in your car, there's so much to see and do around the surrounding coast and countryside.
The North Yorkshire coast and Yorkshire moors are within easy reach, as well as the popular seaside towns of Whitby, Scarborough, and Bridlington.

Beautiful Beaches
The Yorkshire coast stretches from Spurn Point in the south to Saltburn-by-the-Sea. The coastline features series of gorgeous and very different seaside towns and villages, from traditional resorts like Bridlington, Filey, Scarborough and Whitby, to picture-postcard fishing villages like Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes
There is direct access from The Bay to a stunning Blue Flag sandy beach - winner of The Times Best Beach 2018. Fly a kite, go fossil hunting, build a sandcastle or watch the seals. If you're feeling more energetic, plan a walk along one of the many coastal paths.
Culture & History
The Yorkshire coast is full of history. The area is home to Star Carr, a Mesolithic archaeological site dating from around 9000 BC. The Romans built roads and signal stations, and later, the the Vikings arrived - you'll find reminders of their presence everywhere in the area. The Victorians were fans of the Yorkshire coast and built railway lines to the popular resorts, travelling to enjoy the seaside in their thousands.
Historical highlights for us include Anne Bronte's grave and Scarborough Castle, Whitby Abbey, York Castle Museum and Jorvik Viking Centre in York, Burton Agnes Hall & Gardens at Driffield, Eden Camp, Rievaulx Abbey near Helmsley and Castle Howard.
Fun for the Kids
There are so many great activities in the area, so even if the weather is inclement, you can find something fun to do with the kids. Enjoy traditional seaside food and amusements at Cobble Landing. Other favourite activities include a trip on North Yorkshire Moors Railway or the North Bay Railway at Scarborough, Flamingo Land, Alpamare Waterpark and The Deep at Hull. Try Country Park, Filey for cliff top views and miniature golf, Bondville Model Village and Bridlington Leisure World for splashy fun. Sewerby Hall and Gardens, near Bridlington is also a great day out.
And you don't have to spend money to have a great time - try crabbing off Bridlington Pier, rock pooling at Filey Brigg and fossil hunting (try Hidden Horizons for tours). Or how about a visit to John Bull's Candy Kingdom in Bridlington for a factory tour and a tumble in the soft play area.
Nature & Wildlife
You'll find an abundance of glorious nature and wildlife close to Meadowside House.
Visit RSPB Bempton Cliffs nature reserve, with its breathtaking views. The towering chalk cliffs are home to 200,000 sea birds, including puffins between April and July. You can also get close up with Seabird Puffin Cruises.
Other places to visit include Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park and Scarborough Sealife Sanctuary. Betton Farm, Playdale Farm Park and Park Rose Village, Animal Park and Birds of Prey Centre also offer a fun day out.
Get Active
If relaxing's not your style, you'll find lots locally to get you moving. Bike hire is available at Bike About Filey, where you can also find information about cycle routes in the surrounding area.
Explore the beautiful Dalby Forest on a self-balancing electric segway at Forest Segway Experience, or try the Go Ape Tree Top Adventure.
A long stroll along the miles of beach either into Filey or in the other direction towards Bempton cliff is lovely at all times of year and good for the soul (just wrap up in winter). Make sure you check the tide times before setting off though. Two National Trails start/end in Filey - the Yorkshire Wolds Way and the Cleveland Way.
Fabulous Food
The towns and villages around Meadowside House offer many options for delicious food. You'll find everything from cosy pubs and traditional tea rooms to fine dining in upmarket hotels and restaurants.
What can beat fresh fish and chips eaten warm from the paper? There are lots of great fish and chip shops in Filey.
Other nearby pubs and restaurants include The Piebald Inn, Wrangham House Hotel, San Marcos, The Boat Shed, The Farrier and The Plough Inn.
North Yorkshire Moors
